Measuring the upper bole
Forest Measurement and Modelling.

Measurement of the size of the bole above breast height may be necessary to determine: The most accurate approach to measuring upper bole dimensions is to climb the tree and use calipers or a tape. However, where this is expensive or unsafe, dendrometers like the Relaskop may be used.

A taper equation is often used to predict the size of the upper bole. These equations can provide varying degrees of accuracy, but are often adequate for routine use.
