Here are a list of the main Reader's (Mosaic and Netscape) functions that you will be using and a brief explanation of their use:

  • THE DOCUMENT LINK CAPABILITY

Each time you see a word or phrase written in blue this indicates that a link to another document is available. By clicking on this word you will automatically be taken to another document which is relevant to the subject. (To see how this works: click here! ) The Readers are designed to be used in connection with the internet which enables links to documents all around the world.

When you have travelled down a link, the colour changes. If another document also has the same link, you will notice that its colour has changed too. This is a useful way of seeing where you have been.

  • THE BACKWARD ARROW:

The backward arrow is located at the top of the screen and clicking on it will take you back to the previous document. If you use this arrow to travel backwards through all the documents you have viewed you will end up back where you started (the Home page). This function is most helpful when using the document link capability as you can return to your original document after viewing each of the links.

  • THE FORWARD ARROW:

The forward arrow is located to the right of the backward arrow at the top of the screen. Clicking on this arrow will take you forward to the next document. This function can only be used in conjunction with the backward arrow as you can only move through those documents you have already viewed. For example, if after using the document link capability you return to the original document (using the backward arrow) and then decide you wish to view the link document again, you can use the forward arrow to move to it. However, you can not move forward to a document that you have not viewed before.

  • THE HISTORY FUNCTION

This function enables you to see a list of all the files that you have viewed during your current session. You can access the history function in Mosaic by clicking on "Navigate" from the pull down menu and then clicking on "History". In Netscape, click on Go and then select the document from the pull down list. If you would like to review one of the documents listed in the history, you can return to it by highlighting the document filename using the keyboard arrow keys or the mouse and then clicking on "Load" at the bottom of the window. This will reload the document.

  • LOADING A DOCUMENT FROM YOUR DISK OR COMPUTER

You can load a new document that resides on your computer or disk at any time you wish. Simply click on "File" at the pull down menu and then click on "Open Local File" or "Open File ...". If you know the name of the document that you wish to open, type it in the "File Name" box and then click on "OK". If not, use your mouse to search through the list of available files below the box by clicking on the up and down arrows. Double-click on the file you wish to open and it will automatically load. It may take a little while, however. Please Note: you can only load documents with a "htm" extension (ie ".htm").

  • LOADING A DOCUMENT FROM THE INTERNET

If you are connected to the World Wide Web or Internet, you can access documents at any time. Click on "File" then "Open Location" and type in the location of the document you wish to view. The location will have a format similar to the following one (for this help message):

    http://online.anu.edu.au/Forestry/mesuration/HELP.HTM
Note that you must get the capitalisation correct!

  • RETURNING TO THE HELP SCREEN

You will easily be able to return to this help screen from any document by clicking on the Help link. Every (well, most) documents has a link to this help screen which is located at the bottom of the last page and looks like this:

    Help!

Just click on the word and you will be returned to this document.

  • MOVIES

Clicking on this icon will run a movie related to the current document. At present, only computers with Simple Player (or equivalent) can make use of this facility. The movies may take a while to be transferred over the network, so you may need to be patient. The movies may also need a lot of RAM and early model computers may not be able to run them while running the Reader. In this case, save the movie on your disk, exit the Reader and then try playing the movie.

  • GETTING STARTED

Now to get you started, you can reach your first forest mensuration document by clicking here. Don't forget, you can quickly return to this help screen at any time by clicking on the help picture or word!
