Tree volume estimation:
Fluid displacement ©

Fluid displacement is a highly accurate, costly and highly specialised method for determining stem volume but it is not applied in routine mensuration practice. Fluid displacement is used occasionally in research when a high level of accuracy is required.

Essentially, the tree stem is cut into sections and each section is placed in a large water bath. The volume of water displaced by a section equals the volume of that section and the sum of the volumes of all sections equals the stem volume.
