Piling sticks or stickers (cleats) should be straight grained to avoid distortion during drying and they should all be machined to similar dimensions. Piling sticks vary in size according to whether they are used for softwoods or hardwoods. For softwoods sticks 25 mm thick by 50 mm wide spaced at intervals of 0.6-1.2 m depending on the thickness of the timber are used. For hardwoods, squared sticks 25 x 32 mm or 25 x 38 mm are recommended. For timber less than 25 mm thick the best size of sticker is 25 x 13 mm with the spacing ranging from 40-60 cm. Softwood stickers are preferred as they are not susceptible to lyctus and are relatively soft.
