Brown stain which occurs in the sapwood and is present 1-2mm under the surface has been found in timber dried on high temperature, accelerated conventional and conventional temperature drying schedules, although it is less of a problem in conventional temperature drying. It is believed to be due to concentration of natural chemicals just below the boards surface, which when the moisture moves to the surface, the concentration of chemicals are then oxidised to give the brown colour.
