Practical Aspects of Kiln Drying

Kiln drying can be subdivided into the following stages;

  • Examination of the timber to assess the initial moisture content and to examine whether defects are present. (Hartley & Marchant 1988)

  • Stacking and handling. As with air drying, careful attention needs to be given to the stacking of timber within the kiln and to the placement of stickers. For the drying of distortion prone timber or high temperature drying of timber the top of the stack should be weighed down with concrete slabs or other suitable non ferrous material.
