The Economics of Air Drying

The cost of air drying is dependent upon the following factors;

  • The capital cost of establishing the drying yard
  • Value of the land
  • Value of the timber and the current rate of interest on capital
  • Overheads including depreciation, maintenance and insurance.
  • Time taken for drying.
The major cost of air drying is usually the interest on the value of timber held in stock and the cost per unit volume of timber is often directly proportional to drying time. Often it is more economic to air dry down to FSP and then kiln dry down to the final EMC.
